A typo in a customer service phone number on M&T Bank cards for its business clients has led the Buffalo-based bank to reissue an undisclosed number of new cards this month.
But a customer who alerted the bank in mid-December said M&T exposed customers to a potential scam by not acting sooner. He shared recordings of conversations he had with two customer service representatives that indicated the bank knew for a year or more about the problem.
No one has reported losing money or being subject to any fraud as a result of the misprint, said Julia Shanahan, assistant vice president in marketing and communications and corporate communications for M&T.
She declined to say how many customers had cards with the wrong number or what type of cards were involved, except to say it was a "small number" and that the bank found out about the problem last month.
The correct number for M&T's "business telephone banking" line is 800-7246070. The incorrect number is off by a single digit and directs callers to another 800 number. A recent call to that number indicated the caller was entitled to a "retail rebate"...
