BECKLEY - Raleigh County-based Marquee Cinemas has dropped plans to build a 14-screen theater in Morgantown - for now.
"We'll have to wait and see how it goes," said Curtis McCall, Marquee's president and CEO.
The Oregon-based Wallace Theaters last year announced plans to construct a 12-screen theater at the University Town Centre in Granville. To counter the new competition, Carmike Cinemas announced it would add stadium seating and a new sound system to its eight-screen theater in the Morgantown Mall.
Marquee entered the mix last year, revealing plans for a stadium theater at Suncrest Towne Centre, which is on the other side of Morgantown.
"The other theater beat us," McCall said. "Two theaters pretty much take care of the market....
