The president/ceo (since November 2004) knows that many magazine staffers work long hours for relatively little pay (Lyne was one herself before rising to Premiere founding editor-in-chief in 1987), so she had the MSLO board of directors transfer $200,000 of her $625,000 fiscal 2005 bonus (atop a $900,000 salary) to a "pool" for deserving employees. (Remaining $425,000 was converted into restricted shares that will not fully vest until 2009.) Lyne told BusinessWeek senior writer Diane Brady (May 1) that her gesture is today's definition of "what makes a good leader in a public company."
