MCI Communications Corp. yesterday (8/27) said that it plans to bring facilities-based local service to Denver, Los Angeles, Memphis, Tenn., Miami, Minneapolis, Newark, N.J., Orlando, Fla., Phoenix, Portland, Ore., Raleigh, N.C., San Diego, San Francisco and Tampa, Fla. by the beginning of next year. MCI said it will use fiber optic networks and digital switching in the downtown areas of these 13 cities to provide businesses with local service. The company said it will not forget about residential customers, however, announcing that it wants to resell the service of incumbent local exchange carriers to offer local service to residential customers and additional business customers in these cities, pending certain regulatory decisions. MCI said that the state commissions involved need to set prices for network elements based on cost and act quickly on arbitration requests. (Marty Filipowski, MCI, 800/644-NEWS.)
