MCI WORLDCOM INC. is bringing highspeed Internet access to the masses at price points that finally could match those of cable modems.
The carrier said last week it will make available Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service nationwide through its Uunet division to about 400 points of presence by year end and to about to 600 POPs by March. By late 1999, MCI WorldCom plans to have service in about 1,000 POPs.
Fairfax-based Uunet will rely on its internal competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) services, through its former MFS and Brooks Fiber divisions, as well as partner with regional Bell operating companies and at least two CLECs-Covad Communications, Santa Clara, Calif., and Northpoint Communications Inc., San Francisco.
