If the seven photographers arrested on the scene of the August 31 Paris car crash that took the lives of the Princess of Wales, boyfriend Dodi Al-Fayed, and driver Henri Paul are the scum of the earth, then many of us are guilty by association. This in no way absolves the shutterbugs. In fact, if a French court finds that they did, indeed, cause the accident by blinding the intoxicated Paul with their flashbulbs or that, they subsequently interfered with the rescue, then they deserve to have the book thrown at them. But remember, too, that the "paparazzi" would not have been there were it not for the media moguls who pay the six- and seven-figure sums for their photos, and, ultimately, for the public who buy the magazines and newspapers. Thus, it boils down to Economics 101: supply meets demand, with, now, tragic results.
