Details ran in the May 8 min....At Newsday, James Norris and James Shaw have been named senior vp/operations and senior vp/cfo, respectively.... Stephen Hanks was named managing editor of the Sports Publishing Group (programs, etc.). ZIFF-DAVIS PUBLISHING...The star wars have resumed in the cutthroat world of computer magazines. In the latest skirmish, former Communications Week editor Jake Kirchner has left CMP to become editor of Z-D's flagship, PC magazine. His predecessor, Robin Raskin, replaces the recently promoted Jake Winebaum as editor-in-chief of FamilyPC (jointly pub-lished with Disney). FPC also promoted Dan Muse to editor....In another raid, Z-D has recruited Cahners' Daryl Otte as vp/planning. Start date is June 19....Meanwhile, Bill Machrone is top editor at ZD Internet Life, slated for a third- or fourth-quarter launch. CMP PUBLICATIONS...Exactly one month after getting a new publisher (CMP veteran Mike Azzara) and associate publisher (Michele Maguire), Communications Week also has a new editor: Mitch Irsfeld, who replaces Jake Kirchner (see above). He was editor of Information Week....Going the other way, 12-year Z-D itinerant Fred Davis recently came aboard as director/editorial development. And Beth Haggerty has returned to CMP--as publisher of NetGuide--after a yearlong stint with Z-D's InterActive Enterprises (for which CMP sued). But NetGuide editor-in-chief Patty Adcroft (ex-Omni) just resigned in a dispute over job responsibilities. DISNEY MAGAZINES...FamilyFun promoted Alexandra Kennedy (ex-New England Monthly) to editor-in-chief. Consequently, Clare Ellis and Ann Hallock were elevated to editor and executive editor, respectively. CAHNERS PUBLISHING...Jacqueline Daya (ex-Reed) joined May 15 as vp/cfo...Former consultant Brian Kardon is now vp/corporate marketing....Ten-year Reader's Digest veteran Michele Murphy recently joined the childcare group as group marketing director. NEWS CORP....Paul Carlucci was named ceo of News America Publishing, replacing the peripatetic Les Hinton, whose latest assignment has him in the U.K. as executive chairman of News International plc. (min, May 15, 1995). MEREDITH CORP....Upward mobility is alive and well in Des Moines and New York. In the latest set of cause-and-effect promotions, Better Homes and Gardens vp/publisher (since 1989) Jerry Kaplan moves to corporate vp/group sales on July 1, with associate publisher Alex Mironovich stepping up to replace him. Meanwhile, Custom Marketing senior vp/director Bill Murphy adds new media marketing (online data, CD-ROMs, etc.) to his purview. Details were in last week's min.... Edward Rosenthal (ex-Premiere) joins as ad director for the American Park Network of national and state park magazines. GRUNER + JAHR USA...Another holdover from the mid-1994 acquisition of the New York Times Women's Magazines is gone. Child editor-in-chief Freddi Greenberg exited suddenly last week, replaced by Pamela Abrams (ex-Parents). DOW JONES & CO....Former managing editor Edwin Finn (ex-American Banker) was named editor of Barron's; Richard Rescigno replaces him as m.e. Finn predecessor James Meagher becomes the first executive editor of a magazine group devoted to new ventures....Smart Money editor-in-chief Steven Swartz is now also president/ceo of the DJ/Hearst project. CONDE NAST...SmartMoney founding publisher David Carey starts today (June 5) as publisher of the dormant House & Garden, which CN is slated to relaunch next year....Glamour promoted Laurie Sprague and Michele Fleisher to managing editor and assistant m.e., respectively. Sprague replaces Priscilla Grant, who is relocating to Maine. Also, Howard Grier (ex-Details/Vogue) returns to CN as Glamour's marketing director....Former Clinton press secretary Dee Dee Myers will help spearhead Vanity Fair's political coverage as Washington editor.... Rochelle Udell was named president of CondeNet, a new Internet publishing service. Deanna Brown (ex-Premiere) is sales & marketing director. TIME INC....Amy Wilkins was promoted to publisher of Health. She replaces Bill Kupper, who joined Business Week (min, April 3, 1995). TRIBUNE CO...On January 1, John Madigan replaces the retiring Charles Brumback as ceo. LANG COMMUNICATIONS...Former Hearst Magazines PR chief Charlotte Kelly-Veal comes in as senior consultant/corporate PR. Stephanie Rabinowitz was promoted to PR manager.
