MARIAH MEDIA...Outside mogul Larry Burke culminated the monthly's platinum anniversary by promoting Scott Parmelee to publisher; he had been associate publisher....Charlie Carpenter has been named director/national automotive sales, the monthly's single biggest ad category. NEWS CORP. {NWS}...It's official: chairman/ ceo Rupert Murdoch's oldest son, Lachlan, will succeed him if/when the mogul--whose Fox-TV is proud owner of a brand-new $4.4 billion/eight-year pro football tv contract--ever steps aside....At TV Guide, Lois Draegin and Jill Rachlin--both early hires of editor Steve Reddicliffe--are now deputy editors. Lisa Bernhard (ex-Total TV/The Cable Guide) is in as senior editor, with USA Today's Matt Roush recently replacing cyberspace- bound Jeff Jarvis (ex-Entertainment Weekly) as lead "Couch Critic" columnist. THE NEW REPUBLIC...Will Lippincott (ex-The New Yorker) is the new publisher, succeeding newlywed Joan Stapleton (now ad director; see min, January 5, 1998). ZIFF-DAVIS...International Data Group veteran Gregory Mason joined as publisher of PC Computing. He replaces the recently promoted Chris Dobbrow. Mason until recently held the same title at The Web, which IDG suspended earlier this month as it looks for a publishing partner. PCC also named Lucy Woltman (West Coast) and Michael Bird (East Coast) as associate publishers....PC magazine editor-in-chief Michael Miller has added duties as executive vp/editorial director. Group marketing director Kathleen Goodwin (PC magazine/ PC Week) is vp/marketing....Lauren Black just took over as director/ZD Labs. REED ELSEVIER...Francis Joyce is cfo at Reed Travel Group (OAG Frequent Flyer, Travel Weekly, etc.). One of the finance veteran's tasks will be preventing any recurrence of inflated RTG circulation figures that came to light last fall but were overlooked by its Los Angeles-based auditor, Verified Audit Circulation. BPI COMMUNICATIONS...Newlywed Craig Reiss has transferred to senior vp in BPI's four-title design group (Architecture, etc.). He had been executive vp/editor-in-chief at Adweek, and recently helped launch Luxe. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY...John Fahey (ex-Time-Life) has been promoted to ceo, replacing Reg Murphy, whose resignation-- announced last month and effective in March--took some NGS board members by surprise....Nancy Mors-Ramos (ex-Brides') is western regional manager for NG Traveler. TIME INC....Twenty-seven-year Sports Illustrated veteran Frank Deford ends a self-imposed nine-year "exile" in March, when he returns as special contributor (see last week's min). Deford most recently has been a Newsweek columnist/National Public Radio commentator and, per New York's Daily News, was being recruited by Disney's {DIS} soon- to-launch ESPN Magazine....Peter Bonventre on Thursday (January 15) became executive editor of Entertainment Weekly. Mark Harris replaces him as assistant managing editor, the same title now held by former senior editor Maggie Murphy (wife of EW music man David Browne)....The new regime at Money includes Denise Martin (ex-Food & Wine) as executive editor and Craig Matters and Rob Walker (both ex-American Lawyer Media) as senior editors. MEREDITH CORP. {MDP}...Des Moines executive Steve Lacy next month joins as cfo, replacing the soon-to-retire Larry Hartsook.... Jeannine Shao was just promoted to associate publisher at Better Homes and Gardens. RODALE PRESS...Kevin Senie (ex-Travel Channel/Time Warner {TWX}) joined as cfo and vp/finance....Deborah Cavanagh was promoted to associate publisher/marketing at Men's Health....Nancy Beaubaire (ex- Country Living Gardener) is editor of Organic Gardening; predecessor Mike McGrath becomes RP editor-at-large/health....New Woman's new editor is Claire McHugh. Jill Edelstein, a Primedia {PRM} holdover, is ad director. AMERICAN EXPRESS PUBLISHING {AXP}...Jim Gaines, former managing editor at Time, Life, and People, is founding editor of Travel & Leisure Golf, which tees off in March. He thereby becomes the first ex-Time Inc. m.e. to resurface as top editor elsewhere (although AmEx does have a business-side management pact with Time Inc.). Bill Ridenour (ex-Golf World/Golf Digest) is associate publisher, with Steven Nazaruk (ex-Links) as marketing director....Departures publisher Jack Laschever took on added duties as corporate vp/customer loyalty.
