There must be something in the water at the University of Massachusetts (UMass: Amherst, USA), whose Department of Food Science has produced a number of AOCS Honored Students.
Take 2008 Honored Student Christina Kriegel, who received her Ph.D. in September 2008 from UMass after several years of work under the direction of AOCS member Jochen Weiss, now of the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart, Germany.
Kriegel, who was born in Neuhaus am Renn weg, Germany, is most interested in examining how the molecular and structural properties of food constituents lead to increased or decreased growth of microorganisms.
"My interest in this field arose gradually during my undergraduate studies as a medical assistant and later during my B. S. degree studies in food chemistry in Germany," she noted.
