GREATER METROPLEX - For many people in the Metroplex going to work doesn't mean heading for the office, it means going to the mall.
For those who work in shopping malls the workplace is not a mass of cubicles but a lively place brimming with dining and entertainment options. For mall workers everything from games and food to movies and personal services is close at hand, as is the opportunity to easily take care of their personal shopping needs. And as a social and economic center for the local community, these shopping centers attract thousands of customers every day.
Close to 11 million people nationally were employed in shopping centers in 2000 - about 8% of the U.S. nonagricultural work force, according to research by New York City-based trade group the International Council of Shopping Centers.
