* What is your current role?
My current role is Group Manager Learning and Organisational Development for St John of God Health Care (SJGHC) - a large not-for-profit Catholic private health care organisation that provides hospital, diagnostic and outreach services in WA, Victoria, NSW, New Zealand, East Timor and Tonga. This position was established six years ago to bring a focus to performance and leadership development across the Group.
* How long have you been working in learning and development (L&D)?
I started my professional life in secondary education as well as community adult education in New Zealand in 1972. In about 1985 in Perth, community education became more mainstream and community colleges were established for mature-aged students to return to Tertiary Entrance Exam study, women returning to the workplace, and members of the community, to develop their interpersonal communication skills.
At about the same time, organisations were offering more of their employees training in interpersonal communication skills.
I continued to work in both community education and organisations as a consultant. The next shift that organisations made was to bring people and teams together to plan and to focus more on leadership development. This shift meant that my...
