"In Memoriam" is run on a space-available basis. Those wishing to submit items should include full name, age, location at time of death (city and state), last grade held, units served in, dates of service and, if possible, a local or national obituary. Allow at least four months for the notice to appear.
Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom: Marine Casualties, Nov. 1-30, 2009
The following Marines were listed as having died while supporting combat operations:
Sergeant Charles I. Cartwright, 26, of Union Bridge, Md., with IsL Marine Special Operations Battalion, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendlelon, Calif., Nov. 7, in Farah province, Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal Nicholas J. Hand, 20, of Kansas City, Mo., with 2d Bn, Second Marine Regiment, Second Marine Division, Il Marine Expeditionary Force, MCB Camp Lejeune. N.C., Nov. 22, in Helmand province, AfghanisLan.
Corporal Shawn P. Hefner, 22, of Hico. Texas, with 2d Assault Amphibian Bn, 2dMarDiv. II MEF. Camp Lejeune, Nov. 13. in Helmand province.
LCpI Justin J. Swanson, 21, of Anaheim, Calif., with 1/5, lstMarDiv, 1 MEF, Camp Pendleton, Nov. 10, in Helmand province.
The following Marine died during a nonhostile incident:
Staff Sergeant Stephen L. Murphy, 36. of Jaffery, N.H., with 2d Intelligence Bn, MEF Headquarters Group, ? MEF, Camp Lejeune, Nov. 9, in Al Anbar province, Iraq.
PhMIc Jake W. Aston, USN. 86, of Houston. He served as a corpsman during WW II with 2d Bn, 5th Marines, I stMarDiv on New Caledonia, New Britain, Peleliu and Okinawa. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for valor in combat. One of his 12 grandchildren, Sgt Byron W. Norwood, 3/1, was killed in action at Fallujah, Iraq, on Nov. 13,2004.
LtCoI Edward L. Barker, 88, in Temple. Texas. He served in the South Pacific during WW II. From 195 1 to 1952, in the Korean War. he served with VMO-6 and HMR-161.
In 1941, he left Texas A&M and volunteered for service in the Royal Canadian Air Force to become an enlisted flight instructor. Following Pearl Harbor, he was commissioned in the United States Marine Corps. After returning to the United SlaLes, he trained as a naval aviator at Pensacola, Fla.
