The developer who built the groundbreaking Metro Square housing project in downtown Sacramento is planning to build a similar project in West Sacramento, a few blocks from Raley Field.
Regis Homes of Northern California would build 58 homes on a city-owned site near the I Street bridge.
Metro Square was a landmark for infill development in downtown Sacramento. When the 45-home project opened at 26th and H streets in 1998, it sold out within a week of opening.
Metro Square proved there was a pentup market for new housing downtown, and it inspired similar projects. Now, Regis will try to prove the same thing near West Sacramento's waterfront.
