GREATER METROPLEX - National homebuilders are thinking outside the boxy house when considering what the average consumer wants in a home.
Builders have begun looking beyond traditional criteria - age, income and background - and have found consumer lifestyles and interests to be important factors in determining what to build and where.
It's how homebuilding companies will continue to remain competitive, said Steve Magee, vice president of homes for Pulte Homes' Dallas division.
"Gone are the days of finding a development, putting up a square house and hoping they (buyers) come," he said. "We have to dial into what the consumer really wants."
Industry experts agree the one-size-fits-all style of home isn't meeting the needs of today's home buyer. A married person, age 40 to 50, has sharply different interests than a single, urban professional...
