Novell earlier this year proudly announced the certification of its 50,000th Certified Novell Engineer (CNE). By the time you read this, that figure will likely be pushing 53,000. So what should that mean to you?
If you are a technical manager looking to hire competent and qualified networking staffers (which is not easy, since they are hard to find), it means you'll find that CNEs are a dime a dozen. If you are a CNE or a CNE wanna-be, it means you are being grouped with a myriad of moronic paper CNEs and are likely to be categorized as a person with an attractive CNE certificate, lofty ideas and not much else.
Even though Novell recently revamped its CNE program by requiring prospective CNEs to choose a specialty. the changes are too little, too late, for two significant reasons.
