Microsoft Corp. is opening its first permanent office in Austin.
The Redmond, Wash.-based software giant will lease about 10,000 square feet at Stonebridge, a nine-story, 200,000-square-foot office building on North MoPac Expressway developed by SynerMark Development Inc. and Transworld Properties Inc.
John Bunn, area manager for the new office, says it will be home base for about 23 Microsoft employees now working out of their homes or clients' offices in the area. He forecasts that the office could grow to 50 employees in the next four years, but that could change depending on local business growth.
"All the activity with the 'dot-coms' in Austin is attracting the attention of our corporate offices," Bunn says. "That's an area that could drive more growth for us locally."
In early 1998, Austin was responsible for $70 million to $80 million of Microsofts nearly $15 billion in revenue at the time, according to company estimates. That figure likely has grown with the continued success of Dell...
