Microsoft last week unveiled five new features aimed at making Internet Explorer 4.0 more secure: Security Zones, Certificate Management, Java Security, Authenticode Technology and Web-Site Security Check-Up. Security Zones lets both users and administrators divide the Web into zones, each with separate security settings to the Web site. There are four predefined zones-Intranet, Trusted Extranet, General Internet and Untrusted-but administrators can customize them to meet their specific needs. Certificate Management lets administrators determine which controls or signed code to let on their intranets. Support for capabilities-based Java security helps users decide which levels of access to give to Java Applets within the security zones. Status-checking updates to Authenticode let users verify the validity of signatures by confirming that the code was signed during the period of the publisher's certificate license, according to Microsoft. The company is also providing a security checkup Web site to help educate users on security issues.
