Palo Alto, Calif. A joint project by Hewlett-Packard Co. and Microsoft Corp. to develop infrared technology may eventually enhance the use and marketability of mobile computers, and drive the resellers' market for wireless solutions. Plans call for Microsoft to integrate special software drivers for infrared ports into its next-generation Windows 95 operating system. That feature will allow users more easily to set up computer systems to work with devices such as Hewlett-Packard portable computers and printers made with an infrared capability. Infrared is considered a key feature in various new devices under development, such as personal communicators, handheld computers, printers and interactive television set-top boxes. The widespread adoption of infrared technology could invigorate resellers' efforts to integrate and sell wireless systems and solutions.
