Microsoft launches Catapult
MICROSOFT PROXY Server, code-named Catapult, is Microsoft Corp.'s entry into the fast-growing Internet proxy server arena and a worthy addition to a network security strategy. With strong proxy support and tight integration Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS), Catapult warrants a Catapult second look from anyone planning on implementing a proxy server.
Tailored for Windows clients, Catapult goes beyond traditional proxy servers by providing two types of proxy service: CERNstyle proxying and Remote Winsock (RWS), an enhancement to WinSock. CERNstyle proxying will work from virtually any client, whereas RWS requires a Windows 3.x, Windows 95, or Windows NT client.
The advantages of RWS are threefold: It allows the use of Internet services other than File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Gopher, and the World Wide Web (including services based on User Datagram Protocol, such as Real Audio); it is totally transparent to WinSock-aware applications; and it allows IPXbased clients on...
