Silicon Valley- Hoping to gain an edge on the PowerPC camp, MIPS Technologies Inc. has licensed its processor technology to a high- flyer in the exploding LAN-chip business- Broadcom Corp.
Broadcom, one of the communications industry's fastest-growing chip makers, plans to sell MIPS' RISC processor cores in a wide range of new applications-cable modems, set-top boxes, xDSL systems, satellites, and related products. Irvine, Calif.-based Broadcom will also push RISC technology in existing growth markets.
The endorsement is a major boost for MIPS, and marks its first licensing deal since spinning off as a publicly traded venture from Silicon Graphics Inc. And MIPS now hopes to up the ante in the communications market, particularly for design wins in big-ticket Internet-access equip- ment...
