Thinking Forward
Guy Hodgdon isn't one to dwell on missed opportunities or what-ifs. He even has a kind word for the protracted market softness that has flustered even the strongest resellers. "I think an economic downturn is actually good for a company, because it makes you take a step back in order to fix or alter your business objectives and procedures."
Hodgdon, co-founder and director of technical services for MKT Software Designs, practices what he preaches. The reseller has stayed profitable in recent years due to a variety of reasons: employee team work, a solid customer base, and ongoing marketing, among others. But "above all" other reasons, Hodgdon attributes the company's success to "staying lean and automating everything we can internally. By cleaning up our internal procedures and automating tasks to free up employee time, we were able to handle more active clients with less staff," he says.
MKT not only sells Visual AccountMate, it runs on VAM. It's currently upgrading to version 6.50 of VAM SQL. Hodgdon remarks, "I think it's extremely important that we know the software, and the only way to know it is to use it on a daily basis." This familiarity is already benefiting customers in the form of quicker resolution of support issues.
Of course, Hodgdon has been pretty well-versed in VAM...
