The question wasn't whether to cut the time to build a model home in half, it was how to do it. Coscan-Brookfield Homes had typically taken two months to build, decorate, and landscape its model homes. But in a Germantown, Md., development last winter, permits and land development complications threatened to delay the opening. Company management, operating in a very competitive market, wanted to hold to the planned opening date. So they took a collective deep breath, shifted into high gear, and created the 3,200-square-foot model in 36 days. The feat was accomplished by the teamwork of Coscan's middle managers coupled with computer scheduling that didn't miss a beat.
