The popularity of milk from nonhormone-supplemented cows is growing, and grocery and mass retailers are responding. Several chains in the northern United States already have released their own lines of hormone-free milk, and it's a trend that is spreading nationwide.
Grand Rapids, Mich.-based Meijer and Spartan grocery stores launched store-name lines of rBST-free milk in February. Wal-Mart and Sam's Club announced in late March that the Wal-Mart private-label Great Value milk and Sam's Club label will only sell milk from cows that have not been treated with artificial growth hormones. And Cincinnatibased Kroger has made the commitment to only allow its label on milk from non-rBSTsupplemented cows, as well. Recombinant bovine somatotropin, or rBST, is an artificial growth hormone used on some farms to increase the amount of milk a dairy cow will produce.
