A free-wheeling, open-collar approach to property-casualty insurance sales has vaulted 10-year-old Morgex Insurance
Group Ltd. to the top row of Alberta brokerages.
When you meet the principals at Morgex Insurance Group Ltd. of Edmonton, it becomes evident very quickly why the company is a top-line Alberta insurance brokerage.
The traditional rules of business are blurred, even arguably smudged on purpose. There are no collar and ties at the office. No formal titles. And salty language between the partners is as common as the prairie wind.
"We have a lot of fun. There are no formalities at the office. Everyone is on a first-name basis," said senior partner Jack Mazurek.
Last year the 10-year-old company wrote $42.3-million of property-casualty business, far exceeding the projections of the three senior partners. "We thought we'd grow by $3.6-million last year, but we actually grew by about $9-million. We didn't think it was possible," said Mr. Mazurek.
Half of the premium volume comes from 20,000 active, part-time and retired teachers, members of the Alberta Teachers Association, which has a membership of 30,000. The group plan has been the company's bread and butter from day one.
The brokerage was started in 1986 by Mr. Mazurek, Terry Bradley and John Stoik.
