It's the end of an era in the Bronx.
After nearly 84 years as a New York area fixture, 7 Santini Brothers moving company has been sold to a much smaller New England operator, which plans to auction the Santini buildings in the South Bronx and move company headquarters to Secaucus, N.J.
The sale, for about $10 million to MacDonald Moving Services Inc. of Raynham, Mass., is another indication of the rapidly changing moving business, which in New York has been rife with discounting during the past couple of years.
Upstart movers, many of them nonunion, according to some industry players, have been slashing prices by 20% to 35%. That's led to predictions of more consolidations.
