About the only part of the human body that lacks a medical specialty is the female breast, but that's beginning to change, and docs from across the country are looking at Memphis for inspiration.
And they're looking most closely at the Mroz-Baier Breast Care Clinic, based at St. Francis Hospital. The clinic is run by the husband and wife team of Joe Baier Jr. and surgeon Christine Mroz, who first met at a support group meeting for those who had lost a spouse to cancer.
The clinic sees 450 office visits a month and about 15 new patients a week, mostly thanks to personal referrals from women who appreciate the one-stop shop approach.
"We have a totally different concept in how breast cancer is diagnosed and treated," Baier says. "Typically, it's like a ping pong ball."
