Chevrolet MyLink, a communications system similar to Ford's Sync, will give car owners access to an array of smart-phone applications.
MyLink will let motorists link a smart phone to the vehicle's voice recognition software, sound system and navigation screen. It will provide text messaging, e-mails, traffic advisories and other functions.
It will be launched this fall in the Chevrolet Volt and Equinox. Later General Motors Co. will roll it out in all Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC models, although it has not divulged a timetable.
GM also hasn't said whether MyLink will be standard or optional.
For smart-phone users, online app stores for Apple iPhone and Google Android are hugely popular, with hundreds of thousands of available applications.
