Help Launch Guiding Lights
The U.S. Naval Academy is rich in buildings, monuments, parade fields, streets, and walkways named for distinguished Navy and Marine Corps personnel. While some honor well-known wartime leaders, the heroic deeds and historical significance of many of the namesakes are more obscure.
For several years, USNA English professor Nancy Arbuthnot has wanted to write a book that will include new photographs of landmarks around the yard. Using battle reports, ship logs, personal letters, and Lucky Bag (USNA yearbook) entries, she plans to offer a fresh perspective on the background of each namesake. Dr. Arbuthnot and her midshipmen will also contribute original poems and prose that have been inspired by Academy memorials. When completed, Guiding Lights will be an unusual and inspirational look at a national treasure.
