DETAILS of their capture of 850 Germans while occupying three strategic islands off Marseilles during the invasion of southern France, were revealed by members of the US Marine detachment of the cruiser USS AUGUSTA, on their return to the States following months of fighting in the European theatre.
Outnumbered nearly 10 to one, 90 Marines from the USS AUGUSTA and the USS PHILADELPHIA, took over the islands of Ratoneau, Pomegues and D'If within minutes of the completion of surrender negotiations on August 29.
