The PC market may not be the high growth opportunity it used to be, but there's still plenty of business to be done around computer peripherals and custom systems. And with a new generation of transformative processors coming to the industry in 2011, the PC market may get a boost this year. Intel and AMD have introduced new flagship processors that combine the capabilities of a CPU and a GPU on a single die, paving the way for a revolutionary new era in the microprocessor industry. Meanwhile, other companies such as ARM Holdings and Nvidia are turning heads in the thriving mobile computing space with high-performance, low-power processors that are growing at an eye-popping rate.
And we haven't even gotten to the advances some vendors have made in memory, solid state drives, graphics technology, and cooler, more energy-efficient technology. PCs may be a commodity item these days, but thanks to the introduction of exciting new products from component and peripheral manufacturers, boutique computer makers and custom system builders today have an opportunity to differentiate their PCs, workstations and servers from their retail store counterparts and add value beyond the basic nuts and bolts. And believe it or not, some custom PC makers are already building their own tablets.
CRN's Need To Know list this month looks at a wide variety of vendors that build all of the necessary parts that compose today's computers, from the graphics cards and memory to the hard drives and chassis. In addition, we look at 10 emerging vendors in the market that are building cutting-edge products around storage, processors and network interface cards.
