Netflix Inc. is looking to boost its original programming lineup to 1,000 hours in 2017, more than doubling its output from 2016, the company's chief content officer Ted Sarandos told attendees at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference in New York.
The jump in original hours comes across an array of genres. Netflix has some 30 original series in various stages of production or release and will proffer more than 40 kids originals next year. The company also wants to buttress its position in telefilm production.
The streaming company, which will increase its overall programming budget to $6 billion in 2017 from $5 billion this year, is also pushing into reality programming. Netflix expects to premiere 20 unscripted shows in 2017, led by global competition series, "Ultimate Beastmaster."
