Conrad Wredberg was reflecting on his company's strong commitment to corporate training and continuing education. "You have to train to stay ahead," says the COO of Scientific-Atlanta, the giant high tech cable equipment maker.
"With the rapid changes in the market, the training of yesteryear is no longer relevant," he says. "In our own company alone, we now make new (equipment) models every eight or 10 months. In the old days, we might have made new models every three to five years."
But some things are easier. To train skilled workers and keep them trained, Scientific-Atlanta officials simply walked across the street to Gwinnett Technical College and asked for a little assistance. Being the neighborly sort, they also brought along $1 million to help Gwinnett Tech build
the new George Busbee International Center for Workforce Development, groundbreaking for which was held in August.
