James Hardie Building Products, a U.S. manufacturer of products based on fiber cement technology, has announced it will open its fifth U.S. manufacturing plant in Peru, IL approximately 80 miles west of Chicago. This new plant, which is expected to begin production in late 2000 with 90 employees, will have the capacity to produce 200 million square feet of products per year, the company reports. This will include products such as Hardiplank and Hardipanel(R) siding and Hardibacker(R) interior products for residential construction. The new facility will increase James Hardie Building Products' total production capacity rate to more than one billion square feet annually - making the company one of the largest siding manufacturers in the U .S.
