Abstract

San Francisco - EPA's pending gasoline sulfur recommendations, the Kyoto global warming treaty and consolidation pressures are just some of the issues the incoming Chairman of the National Petroleum Refiners Association (NPRA) Robert Campbell, head of Sun Co., will face. But, "we have an outstanding individual in Bob Campbell to carry on as chairman of the Association and work with President Urvan Sternfels and the staff," said Roger Hemminghaus, Chairman and CEO of Ultramar Diamond Shamrock {UDS} (UDS) speaking to reporters at the association's annual meeting here.

The brisk pace of mergers and acquisitions will continue "as the pressures are still out there to find cost-cutting measures and improve rates of return," Hemminghaus said on the eve of his retirement from the chairmanship of NPRA. Despite the consolidation of the past few years, "there is a tremendous amount of competition in this industry," the two executives said.
