In a bid to highlight the challenges faced by the Indian organizations in terms of their data center operations and find some answers for the teething issues, Express Computer recently hosted a special event titled The NextGen Data Center Forum in Goa between March 16-18, 2011. The one of a kind event brought together CIOs, datacenter professionals, and independent subject matter experts from all across India and gave them an opportunity to exchange views and opinions on numerous datacenter related topics.
On day one, delivering the keynote address N. Kamalanand, Associate Director, Advisory Services, Ernst & Young talked about the overall datacenter scenario in India and some of the current challenges that organizations face with respect to their datacenter facilities. Kamalanand began his presentation by alluding to the tremendous growth India has witnessed in terms of number of captive datacenter facilities, in recent times.
Highlighting some of the key challenges, Kamalanand said that the ever growing data storage demands and enterprise computing needs have resulted in severe capacity issues and organizations are struggling to get a handle on the escalating situation. Identifying power and cooling related expenses as one of the biggest cost culprits, he said that CIOs have to find innovative means to address the challenge before it's too late.
Identifying virtualization and Cloud as the biggest technology trends in the datacenter space, Kamalanand urged those in the audience to employ a datacenter architecture that breaks down the barriers which prevent the adoption of virtualization.
An efficient enterprise begins with an efficient IT and the key to efficient IT is an efficient data center. In his address, N.C. Venkatachari, ASG Manager, Dell India talked about how organizations can leverage their existing investments and get more out of their current infrastructure.
Venkatachari began by talking about how computing has evolved over the decades and progressed from the mainframe era to personal computing era to the Internet era to the current virtual era. According to him, in the virtual era CIO's role has changed dramatically. He said that today a CIO's job isn't just about OPEX at the expense of CAPEX, or bringing out innovation, but it is about driving efficiency without making any compromises.
