Grupo Habita revisits the 17th century for its newest property
The cobblestone streets of Mexico City's Centro Histórico, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, make a fitting backdrop for Downtown Mexico, Grupo Habita's newest luxe hotel project.
Set in the former Palacio de los Condes de Miravalle, Downtown recaptures its history as a grand, 17th century colonial home with the preservation of a number of the building's original materials-gray volcanic and red tezontle stone walls, handpainted cement tiles, a stone staircase flaunting intricate handrails-that forge an aesthetic at once rustic and dramatic.
While unconventional design and a reflection of location are hallmarks of each of Mexico City-based Grupo Habita's boutique properties, Downtown, says Carlos Couturier, managing partner and creative director, marks an especially significant renovation: "We had never worked with such a valuable landmark."...
