Under a $730,000 U.S. Army contract, a two-man Wilton startup is designing a radar system to detect suicide bombers and homemade bombs at distances of up to 100 meters.
Initially, Arthur Levitan and Lester Kosowsky are developing small radar units designed to be' toted by Packbot and Talon robots used in Iraq and Afghanistan. Soldiers use the remote-controlled machines to inspect roadway objects and debris for concealed bombs.
In time, the founders of Personnel Protection Technologies L.L.C. (PPT) expect their devices could be used to detect explosives at checkpoints for buildings and transportation hubs.
Government officials are particularly interested in being able to spot suicide bombers and monitor large areas for the introduction of explosives, without terrorists being aware that they are under surveillance. The farther the range at which a bomb can be detected, the better the odds that military or security personnel can take action...
