Allied-Signal Inc.
Allied-Signal, Inc. Corporate headquarters: Morristown, N.J. Employs 3,100 in South Bend and Mishawaka.
South Bend is the home of Allied-Signal's Bendix Engine Controls Division, which makes aircraft fuel controls for military and commercial use. It is also the location of the corporation's main facility for producing Bendix automotive brake systems for autos and medium and light trucks. The automotive brakes operation alone employs more than 1,000 people in St. Joseph County, including 450 in South Bend.
A South Bend plant also manufactures aircraft landing gear and brakes and is the Bendix headquarters for tractor trailer hauling services. A plant in Mishawaka produces electronic guidance systems for missiles.
Bendix has been in South Bend since its founding by Vincent Bendix in 1924. It merged with Allied Corp. in January 1983. Allied merged with the Signal Companies, Inc., in September 1985.
The company announced a phaseout of its Steering and Brake Components Division in November 1984 and by 1986 had laid off more than 1,000 hourly and several hundred salaried workers. It plans to complete those layoffs in its Engine Controls Division this year.
Allied-Signal, with 115,000 employees and about 800 plants worldwide, had sales of $11.1 billion last year.
