Dr. Herbert Riemenschneider is bullish about the outpatient surgery center he and more than 20 other physicians will launch in northwest Columbus this summer.
But he doesn't want to burn any bridges at Riverside Methodist Hospital, where he will continue to perform more complicated surgeries that must be done in an acute-care setting.
Riemenschneider said he and his partners in the new Knightsbridge Surgical Center want a larger ownership stake in how they practice medicine while coexisting with Riverside and other local hospitals.
"We're working hard with them to dispel the myth of competition," he said. "We want to work with them so they can bring their supportive services to us."
That could include laboratory, pathology and radiology imaging services.
"Riverside is a phenomenal place," said Riemenschneider, a urologist who had his office at Riverside for 25 years before moving to the Knightsbridge building last April. "They deliver tremendous tertiary-care services."
OhioHealth, which is Riverside's parent, wants to maintain "a good relationship with Dr. Riemenschneider and all the other physicians" at the Knightsbridge center, said Mark Hopkins, OhioHealth spokesman.
