As part of France-based nuclear power manufacturer AREVA's efforts to get its new reactor design approved for use in the United States, NRC staff recently told the company that the instrumentation and control systems on a new reactor design will need to be modified to meet U.S. standards.
Staff's directives "are not a show-stopper," nor should they have been a surprise to AREVA, NRC spokesman David McIntyre told SNL Energy. He explained that staff had been in informal discussions with the company about potential problems with the systems at issue and suggested that the required modifications should not present a significant hurdle to reactor certification. NRC staff then met with AREVA on June 25 in a more formal manner to detail staff's exact concerns and how they may be addressed, McIntyre explained.
