Limber up your fingers.
Beginning in September, dialing long distance callven within your area code--will require dialing a 10-digit number. Now, if your call is within the area code from which you are calling, you need only dial a one or a zero before the number. But that's about to change.
Souh Central Bell regional manager Pat Regan says the reason for the change is a shortage of telephone numbers.
"The number shortage has been caused by an increase in the number of residence and business telephone customers as well as the use of new equipment such as fax machines, cellular phones, computer modems and pagers," Mr. Regan said. "This new area code dialing plan will create 640 new area codes and nearly one and one half billion new telephone numbers nationwide."
