Municipal issuers and dealers could reach an agreement soon with the CUSIP Service Bureau that would allow issuers to easily obtain CUSIP numbers for inclusion in official statements and secondary disclosure filings for their bond issues.
The Committee on Uniform Securities Identification Procedures, or CUSIP, was created by the American Bankers Association in the mid 1960s to develop a numbering system to identify all issuers and their financial securities with a nine-digit number. Standard & Poor's operates the CUSIP Service Bureau on behalf of the ABA. The bureau issues numbers for more than seven million security instruments of all types a year. The bureau also collects basic information on each issuer and its bond issues.
