ESCAPES are always on jail and prison administrators' minds with the tremendous risk to the public not to mention the liability to their agency. Aside from notorious escapes like that of David Sweat and Richard Matt from the Clinton Corrections Facility earlier this year, prison breaks are decreasing (there were 2,001 escapes in 2013). In fact, "the vast majority of escapees are 'walk-aways' from community corrections facilities that have minimal supervision," Slate reported in 2001. (The feds are better at keeping their prisoners inside-in 2013 they had zero instances of escapes.)
Software that keeps track of offenders, ensuring the right prisoner gets released at the right time can be a valuable tool. (Prisoners may be considered an "escape" by being released too early because of sentence calculation errors.)
Software can also provide efficiencies for wardens in other matters. As we know, inmates are protected by law to receive timely health services, visitations, and to be able to file grievances. Further, proper care needs to be taken to keep gangs apart, to determine proper classifications and to track inmate behavior and disciplinary records.
Offender management systems help ensure that inmate records are maintained in a timely manner, facilities are kept secure, audits can be conducted and reports can be easily generated. The following are a few of the latest offender management software tools that help make that happen.
Fully Integrated Justice Package
Tyler Technologies' Odyssey Jail Manager is a robust, modularized jail management software package that is a key piece of a comprehensive, fully integrated, party-based criminal justice software solution. The software can cover court case management, jury management, attorney management, and criminal justicerelated e-solutions.
Odyssey streamlines operations at corrections facilities with its unified workflow and task management capabilities. It also aids corrections agencies in working towards a paper-on-demand environment with its ability to scan and directly attach documents and related files to specific inmate records, including an integrated signature capture. But its ability to minimize redundant data capture and to move to complete electronic inmate files offers the utmost benefit in streamlining operations for the entire life cycle of a detainee's incarceration, according to Bob Kolysher, senior implementation manager. This added efficiency provides numerous inherent cost/effort benefits for corrections agencies, he says.
