Chicago - The next version of Microsoft Corp.'s Office will integrate new technologies that expand the Internet functionality in the suite.
Office 97 is expected to include ActiveX components, sources said. "This fits in with Microsoft's philosophy . . . that the source of the data {whether it is the hard drive or the Internet} is transparent to the end user," said one consultant.
Developers will be able to implement ActiveX to enable browser technologies to interoperate with Office applications.
"Office is in the path of being 'componentized,' " said Bob Muglia, Microsoft vice president of development tools. "There will be more this year and later on."
Microsoft has been working to break Office into components to customize functions within the applications, said Michael Graff, group product manager for Office.
