The 2000 Summer Olympics are history.
The athletes have gathered their medals, celebrated their achievements and headed back to their respective countries. Karen Wittig and Michael Crane wish they could do the same. But duty calls.
Wittig and Crane are the dining-hall manager and executive chef, respectively, for Aramark Corp. at the Olympic Village in Sydney, Australia. For the past nine months, Wittig has been on site, preparing for the deluge of athletes, coaches, officials and media folks who began arriving in early September. Crane, who led a team of Aramark chefs in developing the more than 5,000 menu items served to Olympic Village denizens, has been Down Under since May. Both expect to be home for the holidays.
"We've been feeding in the main dining hail since Aug. 14," said Wittig, who is 15 time zones away from her native Philadelphia. "We'll close down on Oct. 4, continuing to feed staff, and...
