In today's environment, the U.S. Navy's ships and submarines must be prepared to deploy anywhere, at a moment's notice. To ensure that these ships are in material condition to respond when called for action, a multitude of players has come together through One Shipyard for the Nation.
These players are the Naval Sea Systems Command's (NAVSEA's) headquarters directorate for Logistics, Maintenance, and Industrial Operations (SEA 04), which includes the four public shipyards and the four Supervisors of Shipbuilding Conversion and Repair (SUPSHIPs); the Navy's Fleet Readiness Division (N43); Naval Nuclear Propulsion (SEA 08); the five Program Executives Offices (PEOs); the fleet's Regional Maintenance Centers; the two private-sector nuclear-capable shipyards; and sections of the entire private-sector ship construction and repair industrial base.
The industrial base is not an infinite resource, and these resources are not necessarily co-located with the ships needing them. One Shipyard ensures the proper management of these industrial base resources so that they are available where the greatest need arises.
The One Shipyard initiative has reduced contractual barriers that hindered responsive support from the private-sector nuclear-capable shipyards. It has also removed barriers in sharing SSN 688 class planning products, best-practice information, and knowledge sharing between the public and private-sector shipyards.
