Mark Peters has one mammoth territory: a state, one entire continent and a portion of another. As manager of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette's high-net-worth business for Florida and Central and South America, Peters must stay on top of this vast expanse of real estate, as well as 34 brokers, several foreign languages and changes in currencies, taxes and regulations.
One year into the job, Peters seems to be thriving on the challenge. His brokers average an arresting $1 million a year in production and seek out only those customers at the "top of the wealth pyramid."
Peters has concentrated on serving extremely wealthy Latin Americans and their businesses since he joined Goldman, Sachs in 1981. He joined DLJ in 1995 and said the firm takes his interest in the Latin American market seriously. As an example, he cites a recent trip he made to the firm's New York headquarters when he escorted a rich Ecuadorian family to meet their new portfolio managers. Helping to close...
