In a statement that has far-reaching implications for the optical storage industry, the Optical Storage Technology Association OSTA also announced September 25 that they have established the Universal Disc Format (UDF), a single file system interchange standard for computer based applications. OSTA also announced that they have accepted an industrywide charter to develop a universal file format based on UDF for high-density CD, in read-only, write-once, and rewritable applications.
UDF is an implementation of ISO 13346, a broad interchange standard for nonsequential recording of data. ISO 13346: is applicable to all forms of random access media, including magnetic hard drives, floppy disks, and various types of optical storage devices.
