When Meredith McCord dropped her plans to get an MBA, you might say her career went to pot.
Indeed, the 1996 graduate of Vanderbilt University instead combined a business and management major with an art studio minor to open The Mad Potter, a paint-your-own pottery studio on West Gray in the River Oaks Shopping Center.
And McCord says she has no regrets about not landing a spot in business school.
"I needed an out after working in the corporate world for two years," says McCord.
She found the out at a bridal shower she attended while she was working in Atlanta, Ga. It was held in a paint-your-own pottery set up. McCord got hooked instantly.
After researching potential markets, McCord settled on Houston as an open field to plant the beginning seeds of her business. She returned to Houston in January 1998 and opened The Mad Potter four months later.
