Pariculate filters are used to reduce soot emissions from diesels. Soot is a concern because of medical research that indicates it could be a contributor to cancer in humans who have long-term exposure from breathing soot-laden air.
The health concerns about soot have been a primary barrier to widespread introduction of diesel engines in the United States.
Pariculate filters have been fitted to a small number of cars in Europe in the last few years. PSA/Peugeot-Citroen SA led the way with the introduction of a particulate filter on the Peugeot 607 2.2-liter HDI in May 2000, supplied by Faurecia. Peugeot remains the particulate systems leader. It started production this year of several models that will have the system as an option.
